    The Art of stunts

    The art of stunts includes both practical exercises and theoretical training. The art of the stuntman includes imitation of a bullet hitting, a straight fall. Falls from a height. Principles of working with an actor. Work with props. Safety equipment for both personal and team safety.
                           

    Choreography of the fight scene 

    The choreography of battle scenes involves the study of hand-to-hand combat techniques for filming. Both with bare hands and using cold weapons.

    Acrobatics - Structure and Dynamics of Rigging 

    Standing on your hands, Upside Down jumps, backflips, front and back somersaults, free falls from heights, rope access from heights, rigging, working on ropes in battle scenes and during explosions. Work on Ramps.
                                         

    Fire Stunts in the movie

    Working with fire is one of the most risky areas in the art of stuntman, and in itself, safety is paramount. Here we will teach you how to use a special suit and protective fluid, how to breathe properly during the trick, how to properly work on fire insurance.

    Discussion of action-scene techniques in movies. (Theoretical aspect) 

    Providing a detailed evaluation of the work of stuntmen. Both individual and team work are considered here. We will discuss technics of behind-the-scenes footage of specific scenes in action films and students will access their opinions on specific films via writing/sketching.                                                                                                                   

    The Art of stunts

    1-2 weeks

    • Fundaments of the Art of Stunts (Theory) 
    • Imitation of lead hit in different styles and variety of falls.


    3-4 weeks 

    • Imitation of lead hit in different styles  with SFX 
    • (Special capsules are placed on the body, which explodes and bleeds)


    5-6 weeks

    • Crushing solid objects (bottle, table, chair, etc.).
    • Crushing solid objects with SFX 


    7 week

    • Preparing insurance for free falls
    • Variety of free falling from 3- 4 meters. (without barrier) 

    8 week

    • Reviewing the material – test 

    9-10 week 

    • Variety of free falling from 3- 4 meters. 
    • (Barrier-window, balcony and stair railing)
    • Free falling from 1,5 – 2 meters onto the solid objects (Table, chair, board or other) drop and crush. 

    11– 12 weeks

    • Crushing through the artificial glass and free falling from 3-4 meters. (The stunt is carried out by the help of SFX crew. 
    • Safety techniques 

    13– 14 weeks

    • Falling and rolling down the stairs.
    • Roll from a cliff. 

    15 week

    • Working on the ramps, including falling. 
    • The Art of stunts

    16 week

    • Reviewing the material – test

    17 week

    • Meeting with a costume artist – highlighting the importance of having comfortable costumes while performing the stunt)– Theory – Practice) 
    • Meeting with the prop master (highlighting the importance of having properly made props when performing a stunt. Theory – Practice) 


    18-19-20 weeks

    • Improving physical data - (jogging in nature 3-5 kilometers, fitness)
    • Falling down correctly and painlessly without special protection. 
    • (Falling in the field, concrete and other non-standard environments) 

    21-22 weeks

    • Free falling from 8-12 meter with one or more partners. 

    23-24 weeks 

    • Reviewing and revising material
    • Period of final exams. 

    Choreography of the fight scene

    1 week

    • Studying of fist hits from a static position
    • Studying foot strikes from a static position
    • Stretching, physical training.

    2 week

    • Study of combat positions
    • Hand and foot strikes from a standing combat position.
    • Use of protective equipment for combat scenes.

    3 week

    • Development of combat techniques with a partner
    • While developing martial arts, keeping the distance and feeling the rhythm with the partner. 

    4 week

    • Imitation of getting hit on the body in battle scenes.
    • Falls - Drops during the battle scene.

    5 - 6 week

    • Practice with props cold weapons - knife, sword, spear.

    7 - 8 week

    •  Short fight scene with a partner - (with bare hands)

    9 - 10 week

    • Short fight scene with a partner - (with weapons) 

    11 - 12 week

    • Function of ‘Extras’ as Stunt performers (Theory)
    • Working in the background in battle scenes.

    13-14  week

    • Becoming a double of the main character - studying his plastics and gestures.
    • (Assignment will be given: doubling/making parody of famous "action" actors) 
    • The posture of the main character during the battle scene.

    15–16  week

    • Fighting scenes (with 2 partners) involving acrobatics.
    • Fighting scenes (with 2-3 partners) for historical genre films.

    17–18  week

    • Various martial arts styles, theoretical and practical lessons.

    19 - 20 week

    • Staging a battle scene (with bare hands and a cold weapon) - The student selects 2-3 partners from the study group and sets up the battle scene himself.

    21 week

    • Choreography of the team fight scene.

    22 - 23 week

    • Repetition of past material - improvement of technique

    24  week

    • Final exam period.

    • Side and back somersaults, stretching exercises 
    • Physical training

    • We will refine and “clean up” the past exercises.

    9 – 10 week

    • All the skills learned by the 8th week, will be adopted as part of warm-up training program and we’ll start to learn front somersaults, Randat Flak and front flips 

    11-12-13-14-15-16 weeks

    • All this time will be devoted to refining and thoroughly studying the techniques of the material in the 9th and 10th weeks. 

    17-18 week

    • Backflips, Arabian flips, Randat 2 and more Flaks.

    19-20 weeks

    • Combining and merging the adopted techniques.
    • Front flip on one foot + both feet 
    • Front somersaults + Front flip Randat + Flak + Backflip, 
    • Front somersaults + Randat + Flak Front Flip + Randat + Flak+ Flip.


    21-22-23-24 Weeks 

    • Refining and reviewing practice.

    Structure and dynamics of Rigging

    1 – 2 week

    • Vest and protector for rigging stunts 
    • Proper use of equipment.
    • Safety techniques.

    3 – 4  week

    • Partner insurance during the performance of the stunt.
    • Jump from a height of 5-6 meters - through the rope.
    • Jump upwards in a vertical position with 2-3 turns, spinning.
    • Jump on low barriers (1-1.5 meters)

    5– 6 week

    • Access to the wall from a height of 8-10 meters by walking
    • Access to the wall from a height of 8-10 meters with short jumps
    • Military tactical descends from a height

    7– 8 week

    • Use of air rigging in battle scenes
    • Descending from the height forward (with ropes)
    • Descending from the height on the back (with ropes)

    9–10 week

    • A combination of auto tricks and air rigging stunts

    11-12-13 week

    • Mountaineering nodes
    • In field conditions, ascending and descending (mountaineering).
    • Safety techniques in mountaineering

    14–15 week

    • Air rigging stunts with acrobatic elements (front and back somersault, 720 degrees and 1080 degrees)

    16–17 week

    • Repetition of the passed material, with the exception of mountaineering.

    18-19-20 week

    • Field Training - Stage shooting with aerial rigging stunts.

    21– 22–23 week

    Fire Stunts-work in the movie

    1 week

    • Safety Techniques for Fire Stunt (Theory)
    • Demonstrate 50% fire from a professional instructor.

    2-3 week

    • Presentation of fire protection ointment and special costume for students.
    • Holding fire on the palm of the hand and arm, controlling the direction of fire. (Indoors)

    4-5-6 week

    • Properly extinguish fire on a person with a fire extinguisher or cloth cover.
    • Hold the fire below the knee, control the direction of the fire while walking.  (Indoors) 

    7-8  week

    • Fire on half of the body. Fire direction control while walking. (Indoors)
    • Holding fire on both shoulders, controlling the direction of fire while walking (Indoors)
    • Holding fire on the back, controlling the direction of fire while walking. (Indoors)

    9-10 week

    • 50% burn on the legs (back), hips, back.
    • Unaddressed, panicked jogging and correct breathing.

    11 week

    • 50% burning, panic jogging for 15 seconds, falling on the abdomen and crawling. 
    • Giving a signal to extinguish fire. A total duration - 30 seconds.

    12 week

    • Repetition of the passed material. Thorough study. 

    13-14-15 week

    • 50-70% burning on the legs, waist, back, chest. Unaddressed, jogging forward, falling on his stomach and crawling - giving a sign of extinction.

    16-17-18 week

    • After a fiery explosion in the open space on the field

    Working with camera

    Work with the camera will be spread over 36 weeks with lectures on stunt art, martial arts, auto, and rigging stunts.

    • Composition Exposure
    • Internal editing of the shot and "action" assembled with short shots (theory)
    • Exit and enter the scene during the battle scene.
    • When working with an actor, stand in the correct position - in the shot, so that the actor is not overwhelmed by the stuntman.
    • Protect the distance to the camera.
    • When jumping or jumping from a height, select the angle.
    • Select a view and perspective on specific techniques during the battle scene.

    • He has worked on more than 80 international movie projects and has more than 25 years of experience in the field. 

    Giorgi Ustarashvili - Stuntsman, Master of Kong Fu. He has participated in more than 30 international movie projects and has more than 10 years of experience in the field. 

    David Karkini – Stuntsman, Master of sports acrobatics. He has participated in more than 20 international movie projects and has more than 7 years of experience in the field.

    Shota Ghughunishvili - Stuntman - Master of Rigging - 5 years of experience in the field.

    Levan Svianadze - Stuntman, professional race-driver. He has participated in more than 10 international movie projects, including FF9 in Georgia and has more than 7 years of experience in the field.

    Maia Kanchelashvili – International Consultant and Coordinator/tutor, has more than 10 year of experience in the field: her recent movie highlights include “Kingsman 3” and “FF9” as a stunts coordinator and consultant.

    Weekly photo and video footage will be provided and at the end of the

    3  month long course, it will be delivered to the students.
